OnePlus 5T Review:
The most anticipated phone of the year, the OnePlus 5T is all set to launch in Nepal. Voted as the best phones of 2017, the OnePlus 5T is selling out in no time. The phone promises to be better than rest of the competition. But can it take out the heavy hitters like the Galaxy S8 and the iPhone 8 Plus? Let's find out in this review.
Before anything, let's quickly run-down through the specialists of the OnePlus 5T:
Design
The first thing that will distinguish the OnePlus 5T from its predecessor, the OnePlus 5, has to be its modern design. For the first time in any OnePlus phone, the bezels have been narrowed down to all four corners. The display of the phone also has a new 18:9 aspect ratio which makes the phone longer than its predecessor. The longer phone design is something that we are today even seeing in mid-range phones like the Huawei Nova 2i. And since there's no place for the front-mounted fingerprint scanner, the company had to move it to the back.
Display
The OnePlus 5T houses a 6.01-inch Optic AMOLED display with screen resolution of 1080 x 2160p. The resolution may not sound much on paper but is plenty for regular use. Sure, the VR experience out of this phone isn't going to be as impressive as you would find on the Samsung phones but that VR really is a niche thing not that many people will care about.
In fact, even Samsung phones which has a higher 2K display ship will Full HD+ display resolution for better efficiency and performance. Besides the resolution, I have very less to complain. For instance, the outdoor visibility of the display is excellent. And since the phone uses an OLED Display technology, the colors are punchy and vibrant.
Performance
There's no denying that the OnePlus 5T has an excellent hardware. In fact, the hardware is the strongest point for OnePlus. The phone packs hardware that is easily one of the best in the business. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is the best SoC out there and it is the same SoC powering the OnePlus 5T. The SoC used on the phone is well-known for its efficiency and performance. No matter what you do on the phone, you will not once experience slow-downs. And unlike many phones, OnePlus phones are well known for maintaining their performance for years with no signs of a slowdown.
Software
The OnePlus 5T runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat while Android 8.0 Oreo launched way back by Google. OnePlus somewhat seemed to have deviated from its original goal to provide users with the latest and greatest software features. There are tons of phones that are out there that provide a better experience.
But that doesn't mean that the user experience is any bad. The near stock-like Android is a pleasure to use.
Camera
Just like the OnePlus 5, the OnePlus 5T packs in a dual-camera at the rear. But this time around, both the rear camera have 27mm lens and f/1.7 aperture. While using a same focal length lens has its advantages, the missing 2x optical zoom feature that was found on the OnePlus 5 will be missed by many.
The image quality out of both the rear cameras (16MP+20MP) and the front (16MP) is excellent. Be it indoors or outdoors, the phone takes exceptionally good photos. It's only in a low-lit environment where the phone slightly struggles. Apart from that, there's really no denying that the phone has superb cameras. The phone also takes DSLR like photos using a feature called 'Portrait' mode which uses two lens and some software tweaks to create a Bokeh effect.
Connectivity
The OnePlus 5T has a dual Nano-SIM slot but unfortunately misses out on a Micro-SD expansion slot. The other thing that the phone is missing has to be the wireless charging feature.
The phone has all the sensors you'd expect from a flagship phone. It includes an accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass and an excellent fingerprint scanner. And yes, there's NFC for short-range data communication as well.
Battery
The OnePlus 5T is powered by a 3300mAh battery. Although the battery is on the smaller side of the table, the battery is good enough to easily last through a day. Thanks to the efficient Snapdragon 835 SoC and AMOLED display, the battery endurance is better than I expected.
And we definitely cannot forget about the Dash Charging feature on the phone. You can charge the battery from 0%-60% in under half an hour!
Conclusion
The OnePlus 5T is a solid phone with the best internals you will find on any phone. It is also priced really competitively. We can't say the same about other flagship phones of 2017. As such, people really like the direction OnePlus is taking. If you are looking for a new phone in Nepal for under Rs.60,000, OnePlus 5T is an excellent contender. This is a phone that I highly recommend.
